Average stay. Room clean, could not get bedside lights on without main light being on. Breakfast was boring, would benefit from some artisan bread and better coffee. Eggs are cooked to order but was not advised of this. Bar area lacked atmosphere so had 1 drink then left. Car park was full but pay and display car park nearby, £11 for 24 hours. Good location for city centre shops and restaurants , opposite railway station.

Perhaps not the greatest introduction to a lovely city.

This hotel came highly recommended, and with a price to match. While it was comfortable and in a great location, I'm far from certian that we got value for money compared with many other hotels. This hotel is perhaps a little limited by its architecture. The room was long and narrow, the bathroom even more so! Although we had been "upgraded" on arrival, this meant that instead of a walk-in shower, we had a shower "above the bath". OK, and at least there was a grab-rail, but I have an ankle injury which makes entering and leaving a bath-tub problematic. And while there was a perfectly good overhead soaker, the hand-held shower head was inoperable, the 1.25m hose having been mangled and bent by someone trying to get it to a useful height! Why did a simple check of the rooms by the staff not reveal this? Additionally, there was no (working) extractor fan in the bathroom. The breakfast was average at best. We ordered eggs, which never arrived, the chef apparently having prioritised accepting a delivery over feeding the guests. Let's be honest, when you've paid £143 for a room (plus an additional charge for parking), breakfast served from a bain-marie with non-arriving eggs is perhaps not quite good enough. Thank goodness we didn't order the "Eggs Florentine" which we were offered at an additional £9.95! Having said that, reception staff were polite and excellent although the entrance to the hotel and the car parking were messed-up by vans delivering theatrical equipment.

Very over priced for standard of room.

Stayed at this hotel last Saturday. Paid over £200 for 1 night and was hugely disappointed with the standard of the room. Decor was extremely basic. Rooms looked tired and in desperate need of updating. Rust stains around taps in the bath, furniture very dated and entire room felt very ‘tired’. Was, quite frankly, shocked at how basic room felt for the price we paid. Breakfast was nice but didn’t make up for the poor quality of room. Next time will use Premier inn. Better standard of room for half the price. Disappointed.

In my opinion this place really has nothing to offer. Nobody to assist with your luggage. You cannot charge anything to your room. Despite saying that there's a laundry service here, there isn't. Some of the staff are very friendly and personable and some need an urgent attitude adjustment. Just plain rude. They claim that it's had a recent refurbishment but personally I see no evidence of it. Carpet on the stairs is threadbare, the table in our room is very rickety and needs some love, glue and varnish. There's a phone in our room but no dedicated numbers, and no instructions on how to use it. Definitely wouldn't stay here again.

Drake’s Bar

Popped in at 8pm for a swift one before getting our train. Drakes Bar exterior entrance is a creaky old fire exit with tatty signage. Had to check to see if it was even open, due to poor lighting indoors and out. The front half was laid out for breakfast, the remaining tables were completely bare. Absolutely no atmosphere, partly due to no other customers on a Saturday night. Service ok. This bar is in desperate need of care, attention and total redecoration. All other bars in Exeter over spilling with people; I think the hotel is missing a trick.

Drakes Bar is the main hotel bar and restaurant and is accessed internally through the main hotel lobby and reception, and as you mentioned the old entrance is now a fire exit to meet regulations. The bar also serves food in the evening and is set for dining guests in the section you saw and allowing those wishing to have a drink to use the other areas within the bar, I agree the bar was quiet during your visit with guests attending events elsewhere within the city. This varies from day to day with so many popular local events as well as those held at the hotel, as you mentioned Exeter offers a great choice of restaurant's and bar's for both day visitors as well as our valued hotel residents.
